If Andy Biggs wants to se a real abomination, he need only look in the mirror. The arguments presented by others only make sense in the fact-free Republican caucus.
“We’ve asked for Janet Yellen’s figures and with all due respect she comes with zero credibility to this discussion.”--Scott Perry
I dunno. As between a Secretary of the Treasury and former Fed chair vs. a guy who tried to get Trump to appoint Jeffrey Clark as AG, I don’t think credibility is favorable terrain for the congressman to fight on.
I think that this deal will ultimately cost Sneaker McCarthy his job. I won't mind that at all, but I'm glad that President Biden didn't spike the football, and probably won't until he signs the bill: let's get it passed, and then celebrate.
The only actual question about the debt ceiling bill is not whether it will pass (it will)...it is whether the MTG-crazy wing of the GOP will try to oust McCarthy as speaker. I'm sure they will want to, but they also would face the very real possibility that Dems would vote to protect McCarthy from this insurrection (ha!) within his own party. Wouldn't that be a spectacle? McCarthy would then be beholden to the Dems.
It sounds as if the Freedom Caucus arsonists aren't upset so much with the deal as they are with the perception of them looking weaker than the image they want to project. They can raise all the stink they want, but if it gets passed they're going to have to either eat crow, get in line, or actually get medieval on Kevin's ass as they've threatened. Margie is their chief bomb thrower and she's already said she's in favor of the deal. so anyone who goes against her will have to face her mighty wrath. Actually, with all the public tongue baths Kevin gives her, bless her heart, I can't help but wonder if they've got a "Me and Mrs. Jones" thing going on.
The IRS reduction may wind up as meaningless. From the NYT:
“Still, because of the leeway that the I.R.S. has over how and when it spends the money, the clawback might not affect the agency’s plans in the next few years. Officials said in a background call with reporters that they expected no disruptions whatsoever from the loss of that money in the short term.
“That’s likely because all of the $80 billion from the 2022 law was appropriated at once, but the agency planned to spend it over eight years. Officials suggested the I.R.S. might simply pull forward some of the money earmarked for later years, then return to Congress later to ask for more money.”
Great column. I’ve thought that this budget deal is better for Dems than they seem to think. All I heard this morning on RW media was how “brilliant” McCarthy was. That left me scratching my head.
First, Andy Biggs and Scott Perry should be in jail for their part in Jan 6. McCarthy now has to be speaker of the house. Biden has allowed him to save face and he has saved republicans from having to vote for that abomination they started with which McCarthy promised would never become law. Pretty soon republicans will find the "work" requirements cost far more to enforce than they save. One wonders how many times they have to do nonsense like this to learn.
Another thing I was thinking of - If you don't have it in writing, it does not exist. Secret handshake deals sound great until you want to rely on them. How quickly will the Freedom Caucus turn on McCarthy? If there is no one else who can be voted in as Speaker, how much blame would they get for essentially shutting the House down? Or does the Rules committee take over that kind of stuff?
The deal does not seem so bad, a little pain for everyone and everyone gets something. I've said in other places that Biden could have been more vocal about the GOP position, in a reasonable way. I still believe that, although I know his concern is not to demonize and inflame issues since they can negatively affect how negotiations will go. And it seems that the Freedom Caucus needs no nudging to show that they have nothing but chaos to offer. The sad thing is that the country will, on the whole, be OK, while they will be able to fundraise and grift off their outrage. If they got their way, they would have really felt the ire of their constituents.
Debt Ceiling Deal Causing the Ultimate GOP Temper Tantrum

Either Chip Roy is lying through his crooked yellow teeth about his ":secret deal", or, and this would be the sweetest, Kevin just shivved him.
I will echo JVL on giving MyKevin credit for the negotiation. I am convinced the likes of Dan Bishop have no idea what the debt ceiling even is.

A total non sequitur, but I laughed: Tara Reade is defecting to Russia! https://www.politicususa.com/2023/05/30/tara-reade-russia.html?_gl=1*uo1qxs*_ga*MTAwODQ0NjYxOC4xNjg1NDkwMzQ2*_ga_VNNQCB04MZ*MTY4NTQ5MDM0NS4xLjAuMTY4NTQ5MDM0NS4wLjAuMA..&_ga=2.7808498.1140398768.1685490368-1008446618.1685490346
Q: How do you kill a room full of socialists?
A: Tell them that there are far left members of the Democratic caucus. They’ll die laughing.
The so-called freedom caucus are not interested in actually governing.
Agree with comments about the whining Rs, but what about the progressive Ds? I don’t see any better reason for them to oppose it. We’ll see.
